How horrible, praying for those poor people.

Re: Earthquake in Italy

I saw this. I am reading Italy is somewhat earthquake prone - I did not know that.

It really is sad to see people hurting like that.

Lord willing, Kristin and I will travel to Italy in a few months for Spazzacamino, an annual chimney sweep pilgrimage of sorts.

Re: Earthquake in Italy

I glanced at 3-4 pictures. The buildings are incredibly old. They were showing a lot of concrete and the older it is, the less it was correctly reinforced, meaning if it is flexed it crumbles and falls on people inside. Wood frame structures are much more forgiving for earthquakes.

Re: Earthquake in Italy

Many of the older villages have stone roofs. That is especially the case in the foothills of the Alps where the festival is held. I am sure they are a terrible hazard in a quake. A large portion of the world's granite and marble is mined there.

Re: Earthquake in Italy

The Italian penninsula was once an island arc like the Aleutians. It's been pushed up into Europe raising the Alps. There is an active subduction zone a few miles out from Naples. The steep bank and underwater cliffs result in a rich upwelling of nutrients from the sea floor.

This has caused the blossoming of diverse sea life in the area with a large population of Sperm Whales (used to be "huge" population) enjoying the squid. Pinocchio's "Monstro" alludes to the interaction of this whale population, though you can't really row a boat into the gullet of a whale.

Where there's "death" there's often thriving life as well. 3,000 people were killed in Naples in 1980's quake there.

Gag Order

Before today's deadly earthquake in central Italy, authorities muzzled a scientist who warned of impending disaster. Seismologist Gioacchino Giuliani based his fears on large pockets of radon gas in seismically active areas.

he drove around the region in a van with loudspeakers last month telling people to evacuate. He was reported to police for spreading alarm, and forced to remove his findings from the Internet.

Italy's Civil Protection Agency dismissed the warnings, saying the tremors were: "part of a typical sequence... (which is) absolutely normal."

Giuliani now tells our sister network Sky News: "These people will have these deaths on their
