Look I dont think this goes much deeper than the Unions want this, the unions are the top supporters of democrats and the democrats think unions are awesome.

I know that what they articulate is not necessarily the real reason (you know my healthy skepticism concerning politicians), I'm just curious as to what reasoning they would give anyway.

I think this is simple. it will increase membership in Unions.
Democrats think that is a good thing generally.
Secondly Unions want this. Democrats get a good bit of thier cash from unions.

The union organizers could intimidate enough people to sign up for unionization. Under the old or present system there would then be a secret ballot for the actual unionization. Some that had been intimidated or bullied into signing the original petition could vote no anonymously on a secret ballot and then the union might not get in. Union people would not like secret ballots because then they would not know who to punish.
