You're right. They smoked some hard stuff. Most people don't realize what it was like to walk through a local market in Christ's day. Along with the bustle of the crowd, the crying of the merchants, the buzz of haggling, and the sound of coins exchanging hands, one would see and smell the pipes of many a merchant being smoked as they sat on the ground with their goods laid out in front of them.

People always tend to see the Bible through the lens of what they've been taught....they forget it was a big bad world back then too.

Here's the deal....a drug is a drug. If a drug is sin....all drugs are sin. But here's the deal about smoking....the Bible doesn't mention it once and it was common way back as far as ancient Egypt. If it is a sin....why is it not mentioned? Alcohol isn't strictly condemned...but drunkenness is. I'd go by the same standard. If it doesn't bend your ability to reason it's not strictly condemned.

I said it before, it is not a "your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit" issue. It is an issue of "Thou shall not have any other Gods before me."

To smokers, cigarettes are your God, and don't tell me you can smoke without becoming addicted to nicotine. It is a scientific impossibility.

Smoking will not send you to hell, but worshiping at the feet of your addiction will.

Cigarettes are not more a "god" than coffee. An addiction may be a form of bondage...but it's not idolatry. Remember, nearly a generation ago they were telling us that smoking was good for us and many devout Christians were smokers. A know a man who is third generation Apostolic and he remembers his grandmother rolling her own cigarettes....and she was a staunch holiness woman.

Anyone else feel like a lot of our religion is "sissyfied"? Everything is believed to be so sinful....they'd cry like babies if they lived in previous centuries.

What I think is funny is everyone expects the law and it's 613 commandments to be the complete rule over life. If it's not in there well it can't be sin. The problem with this line of reasoning is still the failed reasoning many think we are still not under law. God gave you his Spirit so you can DO his WILL in ALL situations not just limited to 613 commandments. That is the reason the ORAL law came about is because of building fences AND the 613 did not cover all actions one must take. Morality in all situations is larger than 613. So seek God not just the written aspect of his Word. That is why he gave you his Spirit. Lean not unto thine own understanding and in ALL thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths. This is now both written and in Spirit!

Very true! My grandfather used to smoke cigars. I liked the smell of them. Even now when I smell them I think of my grandfather. I don't like the smell of cigarettes but cigars and pipe I do not mind.
