If the church can't adequately pay a person for their services that are not large enough yet for that particular ministry.
I remember the first church my ex and I assisted in out of Bible College. We worked 24/7 both of us for $100.00 per week while his parents paid our car payment and insurance. When we resigned after a year of hard labor they offered us triple the salary... Too late.
Well, I work a full time job, and I'm the pastor. You're saying that the church isn't large enough to afford a pastor? I totally disagree with your sentements here. In fact, that attitude is why it is so hard to get men into home missions. Because they would rather be "on staff" somewhere. All over the UPC there are churches with 10-15 licensed ministers on staff yet we can't find anyone to start a new work in an area 20 miles north of me that has 30,125 people!
I was simply asking because I am tired of being asked if we have any "positions open" by people who want a cushy "ministry" job. I have plenty of positions open and none of them pay - we all work around here.

I do not agree with this. Any church of any size is ready for music ministry, whether they can pay for it or not. Doesn't mean they'll get it, but to say that the fine folks, few tho they be, don't deserve good music because they can't pay for it is wrong, in my opinion.
Amen. I believe people should be fairly compensated, but to say that they are not ready for it because they cannot offer an attractive salary is wrong in my opinion. However, I do believe that as the church increases financially it should compensate those who minister both in the pulpit and in the area of music ministry.
Someone else stated this, but why don't we compensate the SS teachers, ushers, department heads, and other workers who are faithful and put in a lot of time, effort, and their own money into what they do? Are they also not ministers?

I agree... as far as time involved, probably no one has as much time involved as a musician does... there's years of practice for a good musician... (only to have someone plug in a sound track cause their to good for the musicians.... )
Why don't we all just get paid for going to church? There's no need for ministers if there is no one there for them to minister to.... So the saint in the pew fulfills a vital role....
I will have to add...that since the tithes are set up to pay the ministry why it is that training ministry workers are expected to work free? Just curious as to what folks think about this?
Why pay the Bible College all that money for training to be asked to work in a church for free?

Shepherd,
I think you have misunderstood something here...
#1. I worked in home missions and dug out a church from nothing. My husband and I both worked to pay the church bills...so no, I am not saying anything about Pastors whatsoever.
#2. I am saying that assemblies that take in more tithes above an equitable wage for the Pastor should utilize their monies to expand their ministries regarding other areas, like music and outreach.
#3. I feel it cruel and unjust to hire someone to work in your church and pay them poverty wages when it is in your power to pay them better.
