What would the church Do if someone broke a rule, like start a study group with ministry involved. lol

We would get spanked from the pulpit...which we did often anyway...

The examples given here are extreme...and I've heard quite a bit in my lifetime. Some UPC, some independent churches.
But there IS a lot of talk seemingly in Pentecostal/Apostolic churches of "Spiritual Authority" and it seems that this type of thing happens. People are driven by fear to submit.
So, what is scriptural basis for spiritual authority? What/who is "authority"? What "authority" does a pastor have over the church members.
I see this as a problem in lots of areas - standards, of course, but otherwise. Church attendance, how people spend their time and money. People are confused and then led to become fearful, often being told something bad will happen to their children.

I once heard a preacher preach that women need to have thier hair pulled back and no curls around the face beacause those were sex curls.
When I was growing up a new some young people who said their pastor would not allow them to date young people from another church unless they talked to him first. If it was approved they could only talk like twice a week on the phone and see each other once a week.
I am so thankful that I have never set under a pastor who preached things that were crazy.
