Doctors will tell you this, but I have never understood why. My children were getting a tiny bit of cereal in their bottles by 6-8 weeks. The formula alone was NOT filling, and they were wanting a bottle every two hours (day & night) before the cereal in the bottle was started.
Giving a baby a little infant cereal before 6 months will not hurt them. I did not give a full feeding of cereal. I added about 1/2 to 1 tsp of rice infant cereal to 4-6 ounces of formula just to make it more filling. In fact, I think if a baby gets nothing but formula or breast milk for 6 months, it's pretty much the same as letting them go hungry. My kids acted like they were hungry all the time on the formula alone. They were being spoon fed rice cereal at about 4 months.
All of my kids were eating baby food (fruits & vegetables) by 6 months, and foods from the table when they were 8-9 months. It certainly didn't hurt them at all.
