Child Tied in Hot Car As Couple Dines

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -

Investigators found a crying 6-year-old boy tied up in a sweltering car at a suburban restaurant after employees reported seeing a man take the child outside and return without him to finish eating.

Police believe the boy, whose name was not released, was tied up for about 30 minutes while the outside temperature was in the 80s Saturday in Ringgold, Ga., about 13 miles southeast of Chattanooga, Sgt. John Gass said Tuesday.

"He was sitting up in between the two front seats and he was crying," Gass said. "He had a rope tied to one of his ankles. The child was just sweating, just soaking."

The boy's mother, Rachel Gilchrist, 35, and her companion, Raymond Minchew, 61, both of Sandy Springs, Ga., were arrested Saturday and charged with cruelty to children and concealing a weapon. Police found a handgun in the car.

Gilchrist remained in custody Tuesday at the jail in Catoosa County, Ga. Minchew was released Monday on $5,000 bail.

The couple contended the boy had misbehaved, although witnesses at the Cracker Barrel restaurant disagreed, Gass said.

"It doesn't matter what the child did. No child needs to be taken out and put in a vehicle, left alone and put in the heat," Gass said.

He said the boy was placed in state protective custody.

"I am glad somebody called," Gass said. "We don't know what else might be going on. I'm just glad the little man is not with them anymore."

An employee at the restaurant said Tuesday that company policy did not allow staff members to comment.

This stuff blows my mind! Cowards treat children like this. You know the horrible thing is that children can't pick their parents they get what they get.
Jesus help me, what makes a man (title used loosely) do something like that to a six year old? I guess you could blame the devil, but Satan motivates not every joker. Another thing that gets me with this situation is that the mother allowed the loser to tie up her boy. Jesus, help the children.

In Jesus name

Last week we went to my son's ballgame. We arrived early for some reason. The only other people there were his coach and his two sons, (one of them plays on the team, the other is younger.), the people working the concession stand and one other lady.

The son who is younger started getting very mouthy with the dad, so the dad told him to go and sit in the car until his mother got there. He yelled back at the dad, so then the dad took off chasing him down the sidewalk with both of them yelling at each other. Apparently (altho I didn't see it happen) the dad smacked the boy in the face.

When it was all done, I walked up to the concession stand just in time to hear the 'other lady' say to someone that they should call the police on this man for abusing that child. The concession stand people told her that the child was his own, but that was still not acceptable to her.

Later, my mom heard his wife tell him that one of the concession stand people had told him that someone had insisted that they should call the police on him. He responded to her, "It wasn't that Margie S. was it?"

At first I was upset that he would think that of me. But the more I thought about it, the more I decided it was just fine. I don't mind at all that people think that I would stick my neck out for a child. The only difference is that if I had thought that what he had done was excessive, I would not have asked someone else to call the police. I would have called myself.

What he did was not something I would have done. I don't think it does anyone any good for a parent to get into a shouting match with their child in public. But I also agree - I would NOT have allowed my child to speak to me the way that boy did and then get away with it. But he did not abuse the boy. So there was no reason to call.

This is a good case on which to implement in the U. S. Singapore's practice of public caning (http://www.answers.com/topic/caning-in-singapore).
