GQ: What do you think would happen if Paul Ryan is the nominee on the fourth ballot?


Roger Stone: I think the party would lose. You'd be turning down all of the independents and first-time voters and millennials and Democrats and many of the Bernie Sanders supporters—not his hard-left supporters but his economic supporters who are attracted by his opposition to the international trade deals and his crackdown on Wall Street. Trump has advocated higher taxes for hedge-fund managers. He's the first guy to do so. So I think some of those populist, anti-elitist, outsider voters who are attracted to Bernie would be attracted to Trump. You lose all of that. The Republican Party under Paul Ryan goes back to being a small country-club party of all the right people, the party who thinks they're the 47 percent.

Technically we’re supposed to welcome previous Trump fans-turned-foes with open arms. But barring some miraculous comeback by Ted Cruz, the Trump campaign will have cost the Republican Party the presidency after eight years of Obama, and perhaps the Senate and even the House – and Scalia’s replacement on the Court as well. Years of effort spent attempting to dispel the accusations of inherent Republican misogyny, xenophobia, hypocrisy, ignorance and blind rage have been undone by Trump’s campaign. those who withhold support for the presidential candidate have no right to blame the candidate if he loses because they failed to support him.
