Most of this depends on how the finances of the church are set up. In the church I grew up in, the tithes was solely designated for the pastor. The offerings were for up keep of the church etc. When the tithe income of the church became enough the pastor went full time, until then he worked a secular job. I know many times he would put the tithe into the general fund to keep the church afloat. In this case it matters not who did the books on the tithes. So long as the church bills are current. That being said any church gets big enough that there is an overflow in income then it is time to appoint someone else to keep the books and put the pastor on a set income.

Back to the orginal post, if I may share a few thoughts on the comments coming from said pastor.

"If you are struggling financially, all I have to do is go look at the books in the office and I know immediately why you are struggling."

Hosea 6:6 For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. The pastor should offer compassion and understanding while this man works thru a difficult time in his life.


"Tithe on what you want to make, not on what you make." Essentially this pastor has told his flock to press God for a pay raise....don't do that.

My fishing buddy(pastor) said today, that his former pastor came back from a ministers convention years ago, parroting a sermon called "God is going to take the garbage out". He was looking right at my friend and others he wanted to eliminate from the congregation for not tithing and/or obeying every order he or his wife made.
That sounds like it was a very meaningful and edifying convention...LOL

Or you could just not pay tithes at all.

I would be glad to pay tithes just like they did in the entirety of scripture.
