Interesting, Timmy. The angle "give and it shall be given to you" is tried and true as an effective appeal. So how is this all of a sudden called "blasphemy?" I thought it is called, "partnering."

I recall in 1978 I sent $25 to a Jesus Name radio preacher out of New Orleans. He promised to send me a tiny vial of "holy" anointing oil. I guess it was holy, and it smelled just like olive oil. From holey, pre-pitted olives I suppose.

A fool and his money are soon partnered, er, I mean parted.
How many times have you heard a preacher say something like "Ask God how much you should give"? One particular time this was said, I did ask God how much I should give in that offering. He said nothing. So that's what I gave.

Re: Timmy Talk

But I get your point. I wonder sometimes if people really believe God does nice things for people, in response to their obedience, or to their generosity. Or if they believe God heals, or raised the dead, or speaks to them. It's funny what people say they believe, and then act as if they don't.

Agreed, but actually my (implied) point was many behaviors we want to call "foul" about only after something reaches a certain noticeable level of crassness, when actually the same essential things have been happening under our noses in our churches, but a different, better way--the way we do things here in River City.

"Thou shalt not be audacious." (Not a scripture.)

Oh, that point. Yeah, that's a good one. Kinda like how skirt length is bad if it's too far above the knee. How far is too far? (Or is it, not far enough below the knee? )

Yep. In the case of the helicopter, good Christians will have a knee-jerk reaction against a pastor even wanting one, but how do we know it's not a legitimate use for the kingdom? For all I know the man is a hub of missionary outreach and he needs to be everywhere (but not likely, of course.) Anyhow, it's potentially a great thing that he attached a specific promise about what God will actually do for the folks who take him (or God?) up on the challenge. A new car within 52 weeks is specific promise where anyone should be able to measure the result. Fool me once, shame on you....etc.

It required only $25 to learn my lesson, as a trusting new JN convert. That olive oil wasn't any more powerful and holy than the kind I could buy at the grocery for $1.50 in 1978. (sarcasm.) Although I wasn't giving to receive a blessing, the preacher did promise me one, and hey, even public TV stations come up with a nice book or CD as a premium for supporting them "in faith."

Good one. I'll bet in some church somewhere, the preacher has learned to never again say it like that.

Timmy, but what's a "spirit?"

Ask a Christian. Better yet, ask ten Christians. You'll get 12 answers.
