While this has been fun and I know we like to argue things it strikes me that it seems no one has looked to see just what it was Paul is talking about. In our culture we think to study scripture is to look up subjects and compile what we think is being said about the subject in those verses. Instead of reading the context of the book. Many times what we thought were verses about the subject we were looking up have nothing to do with the thought we are trying press across.
The point Paul is bringing home is not disagrements within the body of Christ but things that divide the body of Christ.
Rom 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
Paul lets us know how we can identify them, they are out for thier own glory not Christ. They cause the simple to be decieved with words and fair speaches.
Rom 16:18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
Paul tells us how to advoid these pit falls and those types of deceptions, by simply being wise unto those things that are good and simple to evil.
Rom 16:19 For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.
One of my halmark scriptues on this is found in Phillipians
Php 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.
Php 4:5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
Php 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Php 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Php 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Bottom line IMHO in the verse in question Paul says to (watch them, concider them,) not give them the boot so to speak. We have strait forward instructions as to how and when we are to disfellowship someone.
