Re: Proms and Pentecostals
My daughter graduated in 2000 graduated from a Christian school, so they had a banquet instead of a prom. They still wore prom dresses, so we had to search and search to find a modest one that we felt comfortable with her wearing on a date.
Zac graduated in 2007 from a Christian school here in Jackson. They had a formal dinner too, but then the parents of some of the students had a dance for the seniors. He went to both, but didn't dance - he's just totally not interested in dancing. He took one of our staff pastor's daughters as his date, but they just went as friends, so I wasn't worried about that. Since the theme was James Bond, he drove my black jag. He had an ok time, but a super-dressed up even like that isn't really his thing anyway.
I have mixed emotions about prom. I don't know that I would have forbidden my kids to go at 18, but they would have gotten a very long "talk". I've seen too many pictures and heard too many stories from chaperones to feel comfortable with the whole thing. I didn't attend when I was in high school, although my parents would have let me if I had wanted to, I'm sure. Fortunately, with Christian schooling, we didn't have to make that decision.

I raised my children in church, in a moderate home. They are both still living for God and going to the prom was just a 'normal' milestone in their lives.
Many churches put so many rules on people that it keeps them in the infancy stage of Christianity. Let God and what they are taught by hearing the WORD of GOD [as opposed to manmade rules] give them the Holy Ghost muscle to live for God in whatever situation life throws at them.
Trust Jesus and your young person's relationship to HIM.

Exactly! Which is why we don't need to add anymore to their lives.

Re: Proms and Pentecostals
It's not prom that's the problem - it's what goes on AFTER the prom that is the problem and that can happen after church too.

You know...I think that is an excuse to control and manipulate your 'standard' on others. Our young Apostolic adults need to know how to handle the problems they face in life and you can't protect them from everything. You need to encourage, quide, and be there as a resource, but if your answer is always "Don't do that because it could lead to other things..." They will stop asking and do what they want anyway.
Blessings, Rhoni

This very poll causes my already-too-large heart to simply ache!
Hasn't ANYONE learned their lesson from "Carrie"?

Sadly brother Epley we live in an age where the "Deny yourself nothing" attitude has affected not only the young people in many Apostolic churches but their parents as well. I wonder how long until your post reaps a harvest of stormin' Normans who can't believe you would say anything so old fashioned.

"Church on Saturday night" is sooooo "old fashioned"!
Saturday nights is for dates, drive in movies, and meeting my friends down at the malt shop!
Or as my best friend would say, "Aaaahhhhh!"

Re: Proms and Pentecostals
My children were both given the choice. Neither of them went. My daughter seems to regret that though. My son still could (he is in high school) but I doubt that he will.
