I'm a Plankowner and Shellback on the USS Essex LHD-2. We were also the largest ship to ever sail through the Panama Canal (at the time)... I have video of our Captain pushing light poles away from the ship with a broom while we were going through (along with my laughter in the background. lol) I'm very thankful for my military experience and believe that most if not all young people should serve a short stint after high school.

SD, Looks like we have some similar experiences. I am also a Shellback. and have gone thru the Panama Canal. We were there shortly after the invasion of Panama to capture Noriega (sp). I too spent a good bit of time in the Gator Fleet.

I did a Unitas as well as a Med Cruse. Also did 3 trips to Guantanamo and cant count the trips to Porto Rico.
