They have always had money, mentioned back in Genesis. Money means different things. It is just currency, a means of keeping track of trade, whatever! Anytime there is commerce there is some way to keep track of that! Today, here in the US and other parts of the world, we use paper and plastic.
In Tonga, still today, they use large round rocks! In some parts of Asia they mainly use gold! Jewelry.
