What does having the Holy Spirit mean?

I have been taught that in order to have the Holy Spirit living inside you, you have to speak in tongues, so if someone hasn’t spoken in tongues, how do they know they have the Holy Spirit?

When someone doesn’t have the Holy Spirit by speaking in tongues, what do they mean by the Holy Spirit? What is the Holy Spirit to them?
