This is Paul Ryan, a Republican and the Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee. I think that he has a big future if he is embraced. If the GOP was talking like this instead of talking about Obama so much, they may have struck a chord. By the end of the race McCain/Palin were talking about Obama more than Obama was.
If the GOP continues to trot out the same old tired rhetorical positions, they will continue to lose ground. Even Bill O'Reilly said that the empty ideological and rhetorical positions may still make for a successful talk career, but will no longer win general elections.

Now, Obama could fall on his face but really, the economy has nowhere to go but up.
I think Barack Obama will be as unbeatable in 2012 as John F. Kennedy would have been in 1964.
If the Republican National Committee is smart (I wonder) and if Jindal is smart (I believe he is) then the GOP will save their up and coming shining star for 2016.
Tim, I agree. if the economy comes back, or if/and Obama does well, and things internationally settle down, I would not be suprised at all if the republicans run with a "B" team in 2016.
What they better be doing is revamping the party over the next 4 years.

Great insight- I agree with both Tim and Ferd on this matter. The Republican Party has got to reformulate itself from the inside out. I do not feel Palin is the face of the future for the party. I foresee Palin either as a Senator or a commentator on a cable news station. B. Jindal could be a key player in the party's reinvention.

Jindal is my guy but dont count Palin out. She is a fighter and contrary to popular myth, she is smart. if she wants to she will have a chance to re-enter the national stage and she will be backed by some serious power players in Washington.
It seems a good bit of the stuff the moderate republicans used to bury her has turned out to be false. She can end up as a sympatheic figure and use that to great effect.
The BIG thing the republicans have to do is get a presence in the north east and California. We cannot continue this silly notion that we just write off these areas. It leaves little for the dems to defend and gives them a greater ability to play offense on our territory.
We also have to catch up on technology.

Ferd,
I absolutely agree with you on Jindal and your insightful analysis of Palin. Spot on, IMO! Do not count her out. She is a reformer.
I'd like to point out some very significant, IMO, words by Mike Pence (R-IN) on the direction the Republican party will take during this new Administration.
He points out the social issue on the state referendum regarding marriage in CA, AZ, and FL - we are still a centrist country! Regardless, of this new Administration, we are still a conservative, centrist country.
Quote:
Being in the minority in the House and Senate for two years, we have learned that we have to speak to the American people. A minority of Conservatives in the House plus the American people equals a majority.
House Republicans held the House floor for five weeks and demanded that Pelosi abandon her historic opposition to more domestic drilling. The American people mobilized, contacted their members in the House of Representatives and the policy changed. That's exactly the kind of approach you are going to see.
It's going to be a cheerful opposition. We are going to carry those timeless principles of limited government, a strong defense, traditional values to the American people and we are going to unite the American people, when the opposition is appropriate, we are going to invite the American people to join us in stopping any slide to the left by the Obama Administration or Pelosi Democrats.

We the people!
I heard Pense when he said that. It was good stuff.
but that isnt enough. the RNC is going to have to challenge democratic strong holds. We have to go into thier areas and compete and even win.
Republicans have to have better answers and even more importantly we have to know what the questions are. Right now we dont know either.

Ferd,
I think what happened in August was very telling when we held the floor for five weeks. We probably do have to go into the Democratic strongholds, BUT what we did with Pelosi was HUGE! That's where is it going to begin and end, IMO - with the people. The Republicans recognized the significance and that will be their clear direction. It's a great plan and we will win it!

I love Palin, but I sit at the edge of my seat waiting for her to say the wrong thing, or not know the answer to a question. Reminds me so much of Bush. Love the guy, but he makes you nervous everytime he gets in public.
Jindal or Huckabee would be good, both seem to have their act together and can weather the storm of a long election without blowing it.

Expect to see Newt Gingrich expand his position on the national stage in the next year or so.
I think Newt expected this outcome and has been working to position himself as the guy with the answers for the party.
I dont know if that means he will make a run or if it means he wants to be in charge of the party itself to remake it.... kind of a king maker deal.
But I really expect to see him step up.

I love Newt to, but like Bush he is a Polarizing figure, either love him or hate him. Jindal is new and attractive in the sense he cuts across Racial lines. Plus Indians in the US have a lot of $ and will back him.
