It's pretty much necessary for boxing. Not long slow tedious distance jogging but 30-45 minutes of body movement with heart rate in the 130-160 range, utilising interspersed intervals of various lateral motion, backwards motion, shadow boxing, other footwork drills, etc.
The purpose is to increase stamina, both system-wide aerobic capacity and efficiency, and especially leg muscle endurance which is critical for boxing.
The only boxers who dont do roadwork are either "bums" who gas out after 2 or 3 rounds or guys on all sorts of PEDs (who still gas out too soon anyway).
But definitely not talking about marathon or triathlon type training. That'll kill a guy. Literally.
