Buying a Car.
Yesturday, I went to look at a Chevy Impala. The sticker price was $21,000.00, I offered 14,000.00. Does anyone think that my offer was unreasonable? Are there any members here that got an excellent deal on a car that you purchased? Please share.

Go to Edmunds.com to do your research. They have a lot of good info on negotiating etc. Usually, 3% over dealers invoice (which you have the right to see) is considered a good deal.

Was this new our used?
New, it was very unreasonable. If you can only afford 14000 you need to look at a Cobalt or a Colorado. Dealer markup is large on Yukons and Silverados. US Car manufacters have a 5 month inventory. And the 2008 are scheduled to roll in this month.

I've heard of others getting an excellent deal, up to $10,000.00 off the purchase of the car they bought. My Step-Dad bought a $38,000.00 Buick Lucerne for $29,000.00. So why would my offer be unreasonable BOOMM?

You are on drugs apparently!
You remind me of an asian college student who came into the new car dealership I worked at in 1983.
He looked at the VIN# on the window sticker of a car on the showroom floor then said "Ah! I see here that your cost is $6000 on this $14,000 car!!"
He had just picked numbers out at random in the VIN and decided they were cost. What a trip.
You need to go to Kelly Blue Book online www.kbb.com and click on new cars. You can chooose the make and model and then see the dealer invoice, retail, etc.
There is also a section where you can see if there are currently any inentives on the car like rebates or low interest rates.
Your offer was ridiculous unless the factory has a $5000 rebate going and I would seriously doubt that on an Impala.

Here are a few reasons. The Buick Lucerne is overpriced to start with and since it's price is up in stater Lexus territory GM has been trying to goose it's sales with huge rebates and dealer incentives. Obviously the factory has more dollars to play with in rebates on a car that lists for twice the one you are looking at. I doubt rebates on an impala rarely go over $1500 and probably max out at $2000.
Plus look at the simple math. If the markup for a domestic product is roughly 10% then that Lucerne had about a $4000 margin for the dealer. Your impala would only have about a $2000 margin.
You are the kind of customer that drove me crazy when I was a sales manager because you are so far from reality you can't be worked with.

Okay, thanks for blasting me. The thing of it is, I hear of people making these kinds of deals. My dad for one got $9,000.00 off the price of the car he bought. I don't do drugs btw.

The reason I started at 14,000 was to see if the sales manager would go down on the price of that Impala. The 14,000 was not a price set in stone my friend.

The drug thing was just a joke. Don't get mad at that and not read my two posts as they seriously addressed your question.
I spent 10 years in the automotive business as both a finance manager and a sales manager.
My last job in that industry was as the Sales Manager at an Infiniti dealership.
I really hope you will check out that Kelly site I referred you to so you can educated yourself on this subject.
There is a difference in tough negotiating and just plain ridiculous offers.

The markup on a Lucerne is this large.
Not on Chevrolet.
I gave you a link to read and after seeing what insiders at the dealership have to say you appreciate some of them better.
Trust me that Mid September there will be massive sales. NOTHING is moving on dealer lots here.
