Love is about giving.
For God so loved the world that He GAVE His only begotten Son.
Lust is about self.
Jas 4:2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
Jas 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
The spirit of the world, of this age then is really about self. It's selfish.
Jas 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses,
know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
Jas 4:5
Do ye think that the Scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
Jas 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
Contrast with Love, apparently the Corinthians problem was lust and a lack of love, yet they excelled in gifts.
1Co 13:1
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
1Co 13:2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains,
but have not love, I am nothing.
1Co 13:3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.
1Co 13:4
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant
1Co 13:5
or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;
1Co 13:6
it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.
1Co 13:7
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
1Co 13:8
Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.
1Co 13:9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part,
1Co 13:10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.
1Co 13:11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.
1Co 13:12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
1Co 13:13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three;
but the greatest of these is love.
I was thinking how some say love makes you do things....lust does too. And I was wondering just how easy it is to be consumed by lust for things, and not even realize it. Lust for money. Lust for power. Lust for status. Lust for attention. Lust for recognition. Lust to be first.
1Jn 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
1Jn 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
1Jn 2:17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever.
It's all about the self. The Ego.
These seem to be two sides of the same coin yet opposites
