Dancing
the edict against dancing is one of those traditional standards that has been around for as long as I can remember.
I would like to know why?
I have been involved with ballroom for nearly 10 years and find it to be a very elegant way to spend an evening. The competitions are a blast as well!
I remember being allowed to skip gym classes in JH (which at the time was great!) when they taught square dancing. But now I see ourselves doing a waltz (either standard or Viennese) or foxtrot at a dance (which is NOT allowed by the church) but see someone dancing like a Haitian voodoo dancer at the alter, and THAT is considered ok.
Has anyone else done any ballroom? Waltz, foxtrot, swing, tango, rumba, etc....

Swing is what got me started! Then I fell in love with the waltz (and rumba).
And salsa....
And hustle....
And foxtrot....
And about 4 or 5 others.

I think it was Billy Sunday who said, "Just because there is a band playing on the other side of the room does not give you an excuse to hug my wife."

I took ballroom dancing at Fred Astaire some years ago, waay before I was ever saved..and I do agree that it is nice, elegant., fun, good exercise, etc.
Oh you have a point about square dancing as part of public school teaching (at least in MY day) I loved it sooo much! It was fun.
I think the competition dancing is neat, fun..and I wish I could've would've done it years ago when MUCH younger., {and still of 'the world' } I have watched the "Dancing with the Stars" competition (celebrities matched with an instructor) on tv and it brought back memories ALTHOUGh the music selection used IS of the "worldly" style, and I think that THAT is why it may not be consdered suitable for saints to spend time on.
I suppose there is something to that., I mean my husband and I certainly don't entertain ANY thoughts of ANY kind of dancing like that..a nymore., the music comes with it..and in OUR past at least, dance clubs (usually alcohol flows) are not conducive to spirituality..which is our priority choice to focus our energies on.
JMHO
OH btw the TANGO was possibly my fav! AND of course the fox trot..rumba too., I guess I liked them all (at one time) and I was good too.

I am trying to get my wife involved (and I need some serious refresher courses as well). She does not dance one bit. Not even a little. Nay. Not at all.
But that will change when we are in our new home and actually have MOST weekends together.
I brought up the junior high square dancing because although I was VERY thankful to have a "religious" excuse to get out of it, I never understood the reasoning. I actually had some people explain that square dancing was wrong because of the music and other say the music was wrong because it made you think of square dancing.... (Boy, how often do I see such circular reasoning!)
I know some will bring up the sensual nature of ballroom as a reason and I will then proceed to bring up the fact that while that is true (there most assuredly IS a sensual nature, especially with the latin dances) it also couples it with an extreme degree of respect for your partner. If you watch any well done ballroom dance, there will be no sign of uncontrolled passion.... quite the opposite. There is passion, and lots of it, but in an EXTREMELY controlled state.
I have a clip on YouTube of our Hustle formation routine. (We're the 2nd couple to walk on the floor.)
Do a search using Randy - Dance - ballroom - Milwaukee.

Warning! The following is an actual ballroom dance!
If, after having read this disclaimer, your offended after pushing the play button, it is 'not my fault'.
Anyways, this dance is from about 7 years ago. It is a hustle formation. We're the 2nd couple to step onto the dance floor on the left. (I also did the music for it. Editing out a few bars when it goes from slow to fast and also slowing down the fast portion to about 92% its original speed.)

Please excuse the quality. It was filmed using a VHS camcorder from which was made a 2nd generation dub. I then used that dub to feed into the computer and digitize after which, YouTube recompressed.

HOW CUTE!! Pull away skirts?
The video quality wasn't bad..you guys are good! Aren't you the couple that the woman did the splitz at the end!?
I used to LOVE that song, all her disco songs..I was a "disco momma" to the max!
Disco was so popular..but I remember it from oh..25yrs ago? Waaay before I was ever in church.
The "hustle" I remember doing was different, taken from "Saturday Night Fever" style.
The sound editing was well done.
