What was the UPCI "Philippines Fiasco" that Took Place in the late 1980s???
Yesterday, I was going through old papers from my fathers possessions, and found some explosive letters referring to the "Philippines Fiasco" in the Foreign Missions Department.
Apparently three well-known UPCI figures admitted they had "transgressed God's law", which was a compromised version of "sinned"!
A preacher from the LA district exposed this "Philippines Fiasco", and I have a letter of complaint against this preacher from a prominent pastor in Indiana. I also have a letter written in response to the Indiana paster by the LA preacher!
Does anyone know what happened?

Honestly (removed name) won they dropped the percentage they were taking out to some degree. The rest got swept under the rug. But I KNOW for a fact many Prominent UPC preachers supported him financially in printing this. He never disclosed them but he did not pay for it. Names that would shock you funded it. Sometimes he lurks here he might want to post?

You obviously know something about this, as you named one of the letter writers. What was the "unlawful" 5%?
Also, the private letter I have lists the names!!!!!

The fiasco I'm remembering wasn't to do with the 5%. It had to do with property and $$$ in the Philippines. It was a big deal with claims of "sacrificial lambs" etc. Best left in the past I think.

In the late 80's, I wasn't around the UPC, so this is the first I heard of this situation. The letters were blistering, so I assumed it was some kind of big deal that was being covered up, kind of like Watergate.
That was almost twenty years ago, so I guess we'll let the sleeping dog lie!

Two missionary wives got in a scrap over a bid on Imelda Marco's shoe collection. The fur flew and things got bad.
One offered a bribe of 5% to the Phillipine offiicial to make her bid the winning one and the other woman accused her of "transgressing God's law".
LOL!!!! J/K
That makes sense!
The Foreign Mission Dept wanted to buy the shoes, and then have a booth at General Conference to sell them, with the profits going towards foreign missions!
Just think of the national media exposure the UPCI could have gotten!
