Scripture memorization
What are some proven methods for memorizing Bible passages? I don't mean strings of unrelated verses, but whole passages, chapters, etc?
What method(s) work best and quickest?
Simple repetition seems to be the old stand by, but is there a more efficient method?

Re: Scripture memorization
The bible quizzing teams memorize large portions of scripture.
musicians set the verses to music to make memorization easier.

What are the methods used, though? Do they just repeat over and over, quiz and drill (test), repeat some more, etc?
Or do they use mnemonic methods, word/place/image association, etc?
Wish I had a photographic memory...

Re: Scripture memorization
Im not sure what the best way is, but I think a good way for me is to take a chapter and understand its context and then remember the events in the chapter like a story board.
Not that I can recite an entire chapter perfectly.
another way is get you wife to fix your hair and quote scripture while doing it.
My wife can quote several chapters verbatim and learned while getting her hair fixed as a child. Pat on her back...

I have enough hair to memorize John 11:35 and that's about it.

The ancient, standard 15 method is still the best that I have seen or used.
Basically, take a verse and break it into phrases.
Say the first one 15X, then say the second one 15X, then say 1 & 2 together 15X, and so on.
One ex-bible quizzer memorized 100 verses in one day, using this method.
That is the record, insofar as I know.
Flashcards also help, as they are a visual reminder.

Re: Scripture memorization
You could try the WWII SQRRR approach.
I started to memorize the Scriptures word for word, verse by verse, when I started teaching them in earnest, particularly online, when I would, instead of copying and pasting verses from websites, typed by hand every letter and piece of punctuation straight from an open Bible.

Re: Scripture memorization
My daughter is 14, and has memorized 3020 verses (and where they are found) in the last 10 years.
She was traveling w us to bible quizzes every since she was in her mama’s womb.
Not sure exactly how she does it, but I think just reading it and repeating it back.
She works on verse memorization atleast an hour a day, quoting w her friend over the phone back and forth, every day, self motivated...
Our sons aren’t as enthusiastic...but
they listen to the singing with verses, and also break the verses down into parts then all together. They also quote w their mama every night.(as does their sister).
