Romance Songs to the Lord

Yesterday, it was mentioned a couple of times that some worship songs are a turn off to men because they seem more like romance songs you would sing to your wife and it makes some men feel "weird". Men, how do you feel about this? (The poll is for men.)

Well, I'm not a man, so I won't vote on the poll, but my answer would be yes. I'm interested to hear what the men have to say.

Re: Romance Songs to the Lord

I never thought about those songs in that way, so my answer would be no.

Re: Romance Songs to the Lord

Some songs come close to romance songs. Can't think of any at the moment. Not what I listen to.

Re: Romance Songs to the Lord

There's a song which has been out a few years, "How He Loves." I've heard a couple versions - one by Jesus Culture and one by Dave Crowder Band. The JC version has "Heaven meets earth like a sloppy wet kiss," while every other version I've heard has "Heaven meets earth like an unforeseen kiss." Needless to say, we don't sing the sloppy, wet version.

The reason I mention this song is because I've heard it frequently grouped in with what I've heard termed, "Jesus is my Boyfriend" songs.

The songwriter, John Mark McMillan says this about the song: "the love that he's singing about in 'How He Loves' is not a pretty, 'Hollywood hot-pink' love. It is a kind of love that is willing to love even when things are difficult and messy. He says, 'This song isn't a celebration of weakness and anger. It's a celebration of a God who would want to hang with us through those things, who would want to be a part of our lives through those things, and, despite who we are, He would want to be a part of us, our community, and our family.'"

"Wrap me in Your arms," and "Draw Me Close" are a couple others I've heard criticized. I like and sing both songs without feeling weird about the words. But I understand some are a bit uncomfortable with them.

Read the Psalms and you'll see David writing words like as what's written in these lyrics.

If someone visits a church I'm pretty sure they'd know that the songs are sung to God.

Then again, maybe not. Vertical Church, North Pointe and a few others I've read about, mix both modern worship and popular songs in their services. Mega-church LifeChurch.tv opened a satellite church here (short-lived, no longer around). Their grand opening service had such worship songs as "Are You Gonna Go My Way" by Lenny Kravitz and "Miracle Drug" by Bono.

This is mostly in "seeker-friendly" churches.

Not so sure. Some churches feature music from Nirvana, Pearl Jam and the like. Vagueness seems vogue right now. Or worldliness.

When Perry Noble's church did AC/DC "Highway to Hell" for Easter service I'm sure some visitors were confused exactly who was being sung to.
