Re: How Perfect Love Casts Out Fear
Great Post Michael, and good timing for Thanksgiving, as families gather.
I would add, (of course it might make the video too long) that forgiveness is one of the things that Christians have to do, to free themselves from bitterness. And bitterness defiles a person, according to the scriptures.
I have 2 grown granddaughters, both should be here today, that are fighting. They no longer serve God, but I pray that God will give me something to say, that might help. I love them both deeply and haven't taken sides. I really don't know what their fight is about.
I want to show them love, yet be firm. I'm sure some of those scriptures will come to my mind, if they both are here.

Re: How Perfect Love Casts Out Fear
mtd, you are basically saying that if and when we obey the word our love is made perfect. I don't disagree with this verse but I disagree with your method. I am perceiving that you are saying that obedience leads to love.
Galatians 3:2-3
King James Version (KJV)
2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
here paul is clearly saying that obedience to the word is achieved through the "spirit". and what is the spirit? God is Love. we are made perfect by practicing the spirit of love and that love leads to obedience of the word. when I John 2 says, "your love is made perfect by obedience" it is saying there first is love in the individual that is then being perfected by obedience, not that obedience produces love.

With receiving the Holy Ghost, it comes with built in love.
Quote:
Romans 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
|
But I find, by experience and watching others, that love, just like faith, has to be developed. It is developed by being obedient to 'care for one another' to forgive, when we have been wronged. If we do not love our brother or sisters of the household of faith, we do not love God.
We are also to love those that hate us. The sinner, even when we don't feel like it. This is, because of obedience.
So it goes both ways, we love because the Holy Ghost has given us love, but we develop that love by obedience.

I agree with everything you say renee, your comment is very insightful. my only issue is with mtd saying "it is much more than being nice to people".
Matt 25 clearly says, that we must feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the imprisoned to be saved.
I Cor 13 clearly says if I speak in tongues, if i have the gift of prophecy, if i feed the hungry, if I give my body to be burned and have not love, it profiteth me nothing.
is obedience necessary? yes is obedience without love worth anything? no so what is more important, love or obedience? both are important but love is primary, the root, the source, the substance of our faith.
mtd says we must obey. well what is the greatest commandment? To LOVE God and LOVE our neighbor. These are the greatest commandments to obey. and if we obey these two commandments by abiding in biblically defined love, we will obey all commandments. jesus also said the second commandment was like unto the first. so loving our neighbor is just like loving God according to jesus. so when mtd says we must obey the word and that it is much more than being nice to people. the second greatest commandment is to be nice to people and that commandment is just like the greatest commandment. so the first thing we must obey is love. love is then perfected by obedience to the word. I am assuming mtd is referring to lust, fornication, anger, jealousy, hatred, adultery, tithes etc. but all of these are fulfilled by abiding in love. even if there are other commandments outside of love, the purpose of obedience is to perfect love. so developing the practice of love is the primary objective of obedience. so how is obedience more important than being nice to people? it is putting the cart before the horse. love nature is the seed of the holy ghost. the primary substance, motivation and practice of true christian faith that matures and develops into holiness and obedience.

Re: How Perfect Love Casts Out Fear
I agree, the greatest of these is love. And I believe that Michael would also agree.
Maybe he should define “Nice,”
Sometimes, 'nice' people become a door mat. Sometimes they won't stand for what they believe, because of being afraid of causing trouble, and people thinking you're trying to push religion down their throat. Although I was known as being a nice person, I was like that. And I still fight it, sometimes
It has nothing to do with whether people love or not. I felt I was loving them so much, that I didn't want to hurt their feelings. I'd rather take wrong than to make anyone mad. and yet, I resented what they said, or did. I believe God is showing me, that is wrong, and is helping me get over---WHAT? Just being nice?
Actually, we have to be ourselves, and learn what love is.
