July 4th NOT the birthday of the USA
July 4th, 1776 is NOT the birthday of the entity known as the United States of America. July 4th is the day we celebrate 13 British colonies jointly declaring themselves to be free and independent States. Three of them (S.Carolina, Virginia, and Rhode Island) had each already issued their own independence declarations prior to the joint July 4th declaration. So today is actually a celebration of 13 new countries being added to the community of nations. These 13 free and independent States later formed a confederation styled "The United States of America" which officially went into effect in 1781.
