The effort to recall Sheriff Joe Arpaio finally ended Thursday, when the recall group failed to meet the 335,000 signatures needed by the 5pm deadline.
I was walking out of a library, when this guy walked up to me and shoved a clipboard towards my chest and asked me to sign the petition. "Are you a registered voter?" "Yes." "Sign this petition." "Haha, what is this petition about?" "It's to recall Joe Arpaio."
I walked away.
I didn't vote for Arpaio, but this recall was stupid and against the AZ Constitution, which states you have to wait 6 months after an election to file a recall. Arpaio was sworn in January 7; the recall was filed around January 31st.
I'm glad the recall failed. It would've cost AZ taxpayers millions, all because a minority of the electorate weren't happy with the results of the election. I had hoped Arpaio would retire or be voted out, but he got the votes and thus should be able to finish the term.
On a side note, Arpaio's buddy, Andrew Thomas (disgraced former County Attorney, disbarred for serious ethical violations), has filed to run for Governor in AZ. While I doubt he'll win (Lord, I hope he doesn't), if by some disaster Thomas did win, I wouldn't be surprised if Arpaio ended up as a Dept head.
