Praise report - house almost burned down

I want to thank God this morning for sparing my family and my home. A basket of laundry spontaneously combusted in the basement about 3:00 this am, my wife smelled smoke and woke me up screaming "THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE".

I opened the trap door to the basement and dense smoke filled the whole house. I covered my mouth and went down there (stupid, I know, but as a sailor I had copious amounts of fire fighting training and a bit of actual experience.)

Anyway, I was able to put the fire out. My daughter went to sleep in the SUV until I could ventilate the place.

Thank God for his deliverance, it could have been a whole different story this morning.

I had the same question, I knew it was possible, but here is the how:

Cotton, which is combustible, starts to decompose when the surface temperature reaches approximately 95oC and in the process, generates its own heat. This decaying process is accelerated when the fabric is tightly folded and placed in a confined area. Because it is hot, moist, and has no possible way to dissipate its heat, the oxidation continues to build upon itself, until the garment reaches the critical surface temperature and bursts into flames.

How it got to 95C I have no idea...

Glad to hear you are not harmed, Bro!

If you have a lot of smoke left, a company like ServPro or ServiceMaster can remove the smoke smell completely.

Well, it was actually clean laundry, my wife works at a seasonal burger and seafood joint down on the shore. Kind soul that she is she washes the towels and aprons and what have you from the resteraunt, it was a basket of those that caught fire.

I told her that I better never ever again see another shanty rag in this house.

This AM she called the owner, he is getting a linen service now.

Partially plugged dryer vents can significantly raise internal dryer tempertures - even while delaying the drying time due to less air flow. I would check this out to avoid further problems. We deal with this in our business.

As you stated the clothes can hold, and in turn create unusal heat in the center of the pile after being removed from the dryer.

Thank God you are all safe.
