Marvin Treece Memorial Service
I thought I'd post this link because I wasn't even aware Apostolic Temple had a website. The live stream buffered so much it was unwatchable, but they have a nice archive of the service.
I am really unsure about the "Dr. Treece" thing. Now I don't know--perhaps Trinity College did give him an honorary doctorate. There is one slide where he is being presented a diploma and wearing academic regalia that looks pretty authentic. Most phony "doctors" from degree mills are wearing the same plain robe and mortarboard hat as at a high school graduation. He's wearing a genuine PhD tam and doctoral robes. If this is from a "degree mill," someone did their homework on doctoral academic dress.
If this was the case (an honorary PhD), then they ought to come out and say it. Simply studying overseas does not make one a PhD.
I would regret if that was the case. Marvin Treece was a friend and mentor to me, and he could stand on his own as a self-made man as far as Greek and Hebrew study. I've pointed out phony academics in the UPC before--but Marvin Treece was absolutely genuine.
If he did indeed receive an honorary doctorate from one of the most renown universities in the world for paleography--no one deserved it more.

Re: Marvin Treece Memorial Service
No offense intended toward Rev. Treece, but in my academic experience, honorary doctorates do not give one the right to put "Dr." in front of one's name. Perhaps this is different in some circles.

I'm not sure it's even an actual honorary doctorate. As I say, it's regrettable if it isn't, because MD Treece did not need any artificial trappings to establish his credibility and expertise as a Greek and Hebrew scholar.

Re: Marvin Treece Memorial Service
To some an honorary degree, honoring their years of work and knowledge in a field, is the same as a regular degree due to the time they put into the subject over the course of their lives

Some doors don't open unless you have that title

There are no measurable standards for "life's work." It's just not the same. The desire to claim unearned PHD's is rooted in pride.

In the last few years I noticed that there are a lot of Bishops/Doctors emerging out of nowhere. These non-academic degree clergical personalities should rethink whether it is pride or fraud. Some of these people do not even had an undergraduate degree. ...I find this troubling!!!

Tim, although it has been a few years since I heard him speak I don't remember him ever being introduced as Dr. Treece. I would imagine it's more someone else using the title rather than him claiming it for himself (unless he truly had the credentials).
You knew him much better than I did, but I never saw him as someone needing a title to bolster his confidence or to put on airs. Bro Treece was simply Bro Treece and he truly was a scholar and a lifetime student.
I remember that you gave him your library...and there were very few men who would have been able to or even cared to use the type books you gave him.

Re: Marvin Treece Memorial Service
Hi Tim. We visited Brother Treece about two years ago for their prophecy conference and he really had a jam up time talking with my husband about the Greek Text. I have been in meetings at the UPC campground in times past where he did seminars to encourage the study of the manuscripts and texts. He was really a jewel. Sad to think we are losing so many of the elders lately. I remember the wonderful camp meetings with Brothers Tenny, Mangun, Treece, Barnes and the Freemans,Kilgores, Rhodenbushes, Dee's etc just to name a few on the platform. I realize now how blessed my life has been. Not everyone has been is such services. Jesus is so good.

Re: Marvin Treece Memorial Service
The Lord sent Bro & Sis Marvin Treece to pastor Hodges Street Pentcostal Church, Lake Charles, La in January 1960. I was 21 years old at the time and was a member. When we out grew our church we moved to south Lake Charles and changed our name to Apostolic Temple. This is still my church......To answer the query of whether Bro. Treece's PhD was earned or an honorary one - It was EARNED. He never used the PhD title because - to him - the only title that meant anything was "child of God". But we, his church, knew of his accomplishments - how could we not - and we chose to honor him with his earned title when he could not tell us "no". The Church of the Living God is richer and fuller because his ministry, his sacrifices, his studies and his accomplishments.
