Things That Aren't In The Bible...

This coming Sunday I am teaching on "study to shew thyself approved" in my Sunday School class.

I am going to start off with a little worksheet that I am going to draw up with what will probably seem like simple questions. The things on the worksheet are things that we have all taken for granted as true because of what's been passed down and yet these things are actually not even in the Bible.

A few examples...

Who all was there when Jesus was born? People will often list the wise men... but they actually came a few years later.

How many wise men were there? People will often say three... we don't know. The Bible never says.

My apologies that both examples revolve around the birth of Christ... it's just early and that's the only two I could think of.

But that is the reason for this thread as well...

Can you come up with some other assumptions that people tend to run with that actually aren't in the Bible? It would be a great help in making up my worksheet.

Here are a few one liners:

Cleanliness is close to Godliness

God blesses those who bless themselves

I'll let you know if I come up with more.

Yeah... I could ask if they know if these are found in the OT or the NT.

I could also ask questions for which the intended answer shows these fallacies... such as... How many did Jesus feed with the loaves and the fishes?

Re: Things That Aren't In The Bible...

I think the biggest thing I ever realized that is not in the New Testament when I really began to read and study it, was that tithing was never taught anywhere in the New Testament. Giving was always taught, but *tithing* not once is mentioned in the New Testament in regards to a doctrine or an actual commandment as it is preached today. And I don't know if anyone has heard about the "5 percent offering" that was preached in my church. It actually was preached as standard of giving. Where is THAT in the Bible - anywhere? Curious if there are other churches out there who teach that. Now THAT is fallacy.

I know there are more, but I am still thinking.

Does the Bible say Jonah was swallowed by a great fish or a whale! OT and NT

Both whale and fish are correct. In Jonah 1:17 "Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah", but in Matthew 12:40, it is written "For as three days, and three nights was Jonas in the whale's belly; so shall the son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." This isn't a contradiction. First, it says a great fish, and then it says, the whale's belly. In biblical classification, a whale is a fish. so that is not a contradiction.

Right. In the OT they never called it a whale... But Jesus did... so I'm cool with whale.
