Question Does Your Church Have Watch Night Service?

Just curious if Watch Night Service is a common theme accross all of Pentecost or is it mostly African American churches that have church service on New Years Eve. I ask because I was doing some research and it stated that it comes from slaves waiting for the Emancipation Proclamation back in 1862 (which was a suprise to me). I grew up thinking that every church had watch night and then as I became an adult, I noticed only certain churches did it and didnt understand why everyone didnt do it. Sooooooo, just curious to see what responses I get.

We did when I was growing up. Most churches I know don't do them any longer (thank goodness).

I don't think it's common anymore.

What are they watching? Is it REALLY to kick off the start of the new year? OR do people believe that Jesus is going to return at the break of the new year per their time zone? AS WAS IMPLIED AS WE APPROACHED Y2K. The churches that I have attended have communion. One church also does foot washing.

I'm assuming that was just a sarcastic remark made in regards to people watching for the return of Jesus at midnight on New Years Eve. However if you WERE serious and not joking, the answer is no, no one is watching for the return of Jesus. As for what are they "watching" for, its more of "anticipation" not necessarily watching. Historicaly watch night was a time to give thanks to God for the old year and then give more thanks and praise to God for the year to come. As mentioned earlier, in the 1800 it was watching and waiting in anticipation of Lincoln signing the Emmancipation Procalmation to free slaves.

Hope that helps.

Anywho, I'll be in church (as I always am every new years eve) and couldnt imagine being anywhere else that night. In my culture, we church HARD on watchnight, testimonies, choir is singing like its Sunday morning, communion, the preached Word of God and either one big Pentecostal dance right at Midnight or just getting on our knees and praying into the new year (followed by a great big shout and dance). Watchnight is as popular in the African American Church just as Easter is. Church is so packed that night that I've seen people standing around the walls and out the door.
