Legislating Internet Porn

UK is considering an "opt in" requirement for internet porn. I think this could be a good idea. For those who fear a government grip on the internet, consider the fact that it is already closely monitored for content.

"Instead of using parental controls to stop access to pornography - so-called "opting out" - the tap will be turned off at source. Adults will then have to "opt in." "

Sounds like it could be a good thing.. if it didn't snowball into a huge amount of control and cencorship...

Right. If they can limit the control to an opt in feature and not censorship or databases of users...

The only thing the internet is monitored for now is violations of law, such as child pornography or terrorist threats.

Letting the government censure LEGAL content on the internet is too dangerous in any case. The UK is the definition of a nanny state by any measure, but to want that in the US? That is ludicrous.

Once we let them block one thing "for the children", it won't stop there. They'll start censuring certain religions, or maybe even all religions, unless you opt-in for that part of the internet. I mean, it won't stop at legal pornography. They will keep going against anything they do not like.

Hopefully all of the people that rail against "big government" would cause a huge stink over this if it were ever proposed here.

Besides that, you don't "inadvertently" view child porn websites. You have to be looking for it, or looking in it's direction to get to child porn, or any porn.

You don't watch the USA network and then all of a sudden "inadvertently" view Skinemax, do you? No, you have to be looking for it. It is the parents job to be smarter than their children and block that stuff.

I don't want the US to censor for any reason. If you don't want to visit porn sites, don't visit. And by all means, take steps to protect your kids (and yourself). But I don't need the gov't to do it for me.

Re: Legislating Internet Porn

I dont guess I see the big deal. they are not "censoring" it. They are simply making it where you have to "opt-in" to see it. Whats the big deal ?

Re: Legislating Internet Porn

The problem is who gets to define what websites are behind the opt-in wall? Right now they are saying it is porn, because that is politically expedient.
What websites would be next?
You can believe that it wouldn't stop there.

It's the idea of government getting yet another foot in the door.

Give them an inch and they'll take whatever they want next.
