Immigration and welfare???

Just curious, do they check the immigration status of people before giving them handouts?

I think we need some serious immigration reform.

I don't know but this is another economic issue of giving away benefits without any means to pay for them

I was listening to how Gray Davis (another bone head democrat) had this great idea to double unemployment benefits while not increasing unemployment tax. It has helped to put California deep into debt.

It just does not work. It's economically untenable to give away stuff and not have really high taxes.

We would need to not just repeal Bush tax cuts, but raise them higher then here in California raise taxes all across the board (again). That means increase tax on gas (we already have the highest prices), on alcohol and ciggies, increased sales tax (which is already 8.75 not including local sales tax) income tax, increased fees across the board (registering your car, disposal of oil everytime you get a change...just be creative because thats how they think)

In the end the average person has less money although they are led to believe they get more because they get free stuff and the rich pay for it. And the reality is they may never see any benefits of having less money and getting their free stuff.

Of course this is just incentive for some folks to not work and get free stuff at someone elses expense.

Add to this misery the Unions and the blind democrat economics of taxing businesses,charging them fees and regulatory costs just for doing business and you get even more unemployed. Those businesses have to cut costs because they can't tax every citizen in California. If they raise the cost of their product, they go out of business because there is a company somewhere else making stuff cheaper.

That business will have to quit or move to a cheaper location.

Who came of with the ideal someone can come from another country then get on welfare? Mind boggling.

I think it depends on the state. Where I live you have to show proof that you are a U.S. citizen before you can get any benefits. And I think they verify on a yearly basis, at least for Medicaid.

I wonder how stringent their checks are. For example if someone shows a drivers license is that all they need?

I'm not certain how you "sign up for welfare." You may be able to do it online. That would open things up considerably to fraud.

I know you have to show a birth certificate. I'm not sure of the other details.

Okay... I just went through my own state's online "Are You Eligible?" thingy. After fudging the numbers around (I didn't even have to identify myself at this stage) I got to a point where it said: "You May Be Eligible..."

It then gave a list of things that I MAY be eligible for. This was the qualifying statement concerning citizenship:

"Keep in mind you must be a United States Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident or for Cash Assistance a Documented Non-Citizen to receive benefits."

Now presumably, from what I've read so far I (or anyone else) would have to provide some receipts, utility bills and mortgage info to substantiate the numbers that I claimed to be correct. I would imagine that at this time I would also have to show that I am either a citizen, "Legal Permanent Resident" or a "Documented Non-Citizen."

"Documented Non-Citizens" is interesting. This is a category that appears to NOT include "Legal Permanent Residents." I suppose that this would be folks who have state issued driver's licenses.

Going further into the process I hit this "wall" at the point where it lists the things that I will need to provide:

"Proof of status in this country such as Visa, Legal Permanent Resident Card, Passport, or Employment Authorization Card for everyone you are applying for;"

No "welfare" in this state for "illegals." You also MUST provide a Social Security Number or proof that you have applied for one and that it's in the works. SSNs are issued to non-citizens who have LEGAL residency statuses only.

Now I know how to apply for "welfare." There are many programs listed. I've just got to "fudge" my income figures to qualify... and then be able to prove that those number are correct.

Yes. You can get the process started online (in my state) but ultimately you do have to look a government drone in the eye and show your need - AND your legal status in this country.

Though there's obviously going to be some fraud, my take is that "welfare" in my state is only available to Legal Residents. And, since the statements all include something about this requirement being a Federal requirement, I imagine all states have to follow the rules to get those Federal dollars.
