Screaming Preaching?

So I know that there are people that love the screaming preaching and some that don't. I am a mixture of both IF the screamer is not screaming at a person but they might get loud because they are passionate and even under the unction of the HG. I would have to say my fav screamer so to say is Anthony Mangun. I have heard him say somethings that I don't totally agree with but I think that I understand his motives. Anyway. I wanted to know what you think about the screamers and the ones that their voice doesn't get above a whisper.

I will say that most of the screamers do so for a reaction but they rarely say anything profitable because they are worried about screaming. So what do you all think?

Re: Screaming Preaching?

I don't mind someone getting loud because they are excited about what they are saying and passionate about it, but screaming for the sake of repeating stock "Amen!" versus near endlessly along with the title of the sermon, will cause me to leave the service really early.

Look at nearly every mega church in America... with the exception on Rod Parsley you really won't find any screamers outside our faith tradition.

Here in South Florida, Pastor Bob Coy will have about 12,000 folks show up at Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale. They teach straight expository ... you can't teach expository and scream... at least I have never seen it.

Screaming only works for narrative (telling a story) or topical (pick a topic and string bible verses around it) styles of preaching.

In the UPCI my favorite speakers were Dr. David Norris and Clifford Gustafson who are solid teachers from the pulpit.

The machine gun screamers who do that annoying breath thing (that cross between a wheeze and the sound "HHHUUUHH" between words) make me mentally go to my happy place and I check out until we get out.

I used to simply "mentally check out" as well but since I am now old enough to drive, and own a car, I am not above walking out and leaving or standing in the parking lot -weather permitting and assuming that I came with people I need to wait for.

I don't much care for it myself.

It is mostly a practical matter though. At some point (usually very soon for me) the intended result is voided. Instead of adding inflection to gain attention and interest, everything sort of melds into a monotone drone-zone. I tend to fall asleep on screaming speakers.

Re: Screaming Preaching?

I don't mind people getting loud, as long as I can still understand them. If I can't understand what they're saying, it's just irritating.

I get that preachers get excited about their subject sometimes. It doesn't really bother me. It does get weird when they're screaming the story about the neighbor's dog dying at the same decibel level that they're yelling about the power of God.

Re: Screaming Preaching?

I am listening to AM preach on Youtube from 08. It is an interesting message. He says something in the message about he would go to his father before he made any changes in the POA. He said that he had temptations because of the size of the church there and he and Sis. Mickey had different offers and such to do different things. He said that he hasn't taken them because of several reasons. The main one is that he went to people that were his elders and listened to them.

My thought is wonder how many people would have gone to someone that was a peer to them to get advice and not an elder that has been around the block. I thought that was a wise thing that he did. Just saying.

Right I totally understand getting excited and adding emphasis. But i the base level is already at high decibel where do we go to add the emphasis?
