A semi-hijack on another thread was about how false prophets can be detected. From there, it semi-hijacked itself and moved on to the gift of discernment, and how one knows if one has it, or if someone else has it. Picking up where we left off:

We can learn a LITTLE more in Chapter 14
How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
9Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
30If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
31For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
32And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
33For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
These are some helpful tools Paul is giving the church, trying to rectify a complex issue of spiritual pride and out-of-control charismata. The issue, then in the passage, is not "do you have the gift" as much as "are you out of order?"
Furthermore, I would even venture to say that if the "gift" is not edifying the community, it's not a gift from God at all. You want a nice, clean grid to apply all prophecy. It's not like that. Sorry to disappoint.
It's subject to your unbelieving mockery. But you aren't God. And your world is not so tidy either. Your doubt is not so clear and confined either. So, welcome to the world, Timmy.
Took you long enough!
Busy day ahead of me, so my participation will be limited for a while. Just wanted to get this stake in the ground.

Hebrews 13:23 Know ye that our brother Timothy is set at liberty
Oh, I should mention, the semi-hijack started with my assertion that 1 John 4:2-3looks like a fool-proof method of determining if a prophet is real or false:
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
But, silly me, I wasn't considering the audience, context, etc. As usual.

I like the one who stands up in service and says "I got a prophecy for the church I see the church growing"...lol...Well people have kids so I guess the church will grow....lol nothing special about that prophecy....... And I guess we will find out in Dec 21st 2012 if prophecy is correct....lol
Well, yes, there is that after-the-fact detection method, too. Did the prediction come true? But anyone can make correct predictions, some of the time. And some people are really good at it. But that doesn't prove it literally came from God.
