Police and Politics-- Texas Style! Hee-Haw!

So what about that DA and the "Forfeiture Judge" and the trips to Hawaii on the state of Texas' dime?

Oh that's right, Republicans from Texas can't possibly be guilty of defrauding their own citizens, right?

The story in reference is about half way down the page.

I watched something about this last night, but could not find up to date info on "Law Enforcement and Politics-- Texas Style! HEE-HAW Gimme Yo Cash!"

They went for seminars and took spouses/friends. Whatever. And yes there are crooked politicians in Texas as well as Washington, or anywhere else.

So Big Sis,

It's ok for the cops to pull you over, confiscate your cash, turn it over to the DA so he and the Judge can fly to Hawaii with their wives, friends and girlfriends or boyfriends and their assistants and, well you get where I am going?

This kind of stuff doesn't happen in Texas!

No way!

Republicans? Texas? Corruption?
Surely we're talking about other folks in some other place right?

Maybe everything was legal and it really is ok for the cops to pull you over, take your cash and give it to the DA so he can spend 7 days in Hawaii for a 10 hour seminar, repeatedly.

Texas does have some peculiar laws. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if they are corrupt, though. I was not saying their actions were right/legal. I am just saying the story wasn't that shocking to me.

I try to teach our church they should never compare themselves to others to justify themselves.

Guess I need to teach it to Jermyn as well.

No.

This thread is in response to that other thread that talks about Chicago-style politics like it's the worst thing to ever happen in Washington.

Read the transcript through twice ... where does it mention the DA and Judge were Republicans? Found the Kerr County website listing both the DA and Judge, but nothing about party affiliation.

I'm sure you have something, somewhere to back up the assertion that they were Republican?

Regardless, what's happening in TX is wrong, even though legal. Doesn't matter the party involved, Dem or Rep. The good news is it appears the law may soon change.

I'm not sure the point, other than to ridicule alleged republican officials who were within the bounds of law ... though their actions sounds terrible.

It's not unlike Democrats who bought votes for the healthcare bill by giving favors and taxpayer money to senators in exchange for their yes vote. Sounds terrible and should be illegal ... but it's completely within rights of Congress.

Pointing out the other side's misconduct to cover your own party's doesn't solve anything.

Who said Republicans can't be possibly guilty of that?

Jermy where did you get Republicans from this article? No where does it list a political party!

It did say this "Anyway, we want to hear -- we're going to continue to follow this story in Texas. We have also been getting e-mails from people, saying, look, this happens around the country. This isn't something that's just particular to Texas. This happens in other small towns, as well."

Chicago style politics is fraught with corruption and that corruption has often been felt all the way up to the national level.

In 1960, the closest Presidential election in history was unfolding when, in direct defiance of the laws of Illinois, Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago ordered the polls in Chicago to be keep open for several additional hours until he was assured that enough "votes" had been tabulated for the Democrat side.

This gave John F. Kennedy the Illinois electoral votes and the election. The morning after the election, Kennedy immediately flew to Florida where Richard Nixon was watching the returns and begged him not to go to court over the fraud. "What will the Communists say... ?" was the biggest concern.

Most historians have linked these events directly to the events 12 years later at the Watergate Building. Because their man, Nixon, had been defrauded so blatantly before in the closest race ever, a few of the campaign aides were determined to try give Nixon the largest margin of victory in history by bugging the Democrat headquarters.

Of course, they failed in the attempt. Moreover, Nixon trounced McGovern in one of the biggest landslides in history even without their "help." Nixon's subsequent "help" to these men to try and get them off the hook would ultimately lead to his down fall.

Moral of the story: History will often vindicate those who are wronged. You don't need to cheat the system to see that accomplished.

Another moral: The Chicago machine is notoriously corrupt. And, Southern politics is just as notorious. Due to a "fluke" in history known as Ronald Reagan, many Southern Democrats switched parties to become Republicans. This doesn't seem to have always changed their ways, however.
