rio has a murder rate in excess of 4 times that of the whole usa, after certain times of night you are allowed to treat stop lights as stop signs. stop if u wish, to avoid holdups at intersections. one of our missionaries was robbed recently at the gate to his home. he is extremely paranoid/carefull taking different routes, watching behind him, sometimes he will just drive on by his home if he thinks someone is following him. this time he saw no one ,but they timed it perfectly, as soon as his gate swung open they came flying around the corner on motorbikes slammed a gun to his head and screamed i am going to kill you! fortuately they took just his wallet, the cash he just got from the bank his id and his cell phone.this is common.atms are hot spots to be robbed or have your card copied, rapes are rampant of tourists, san paulo is almost as bad its nasty.chicago has been known as the murder capital of the us in the past, in 08 they had 400 plus murders topping ny and la, they had 700 one year nasty by our standards ! we had something like 16000 plus murders in this country in 08.
