Umm...Maybe Chicago isn't so bad after all

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20091017/...razil_violence

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) – Drug traffickers shot down a police helicopter in Rio de Janeiro Saturday, killing two officers, and 10 suspected gang members were killed in the city's worst recent outbreak of violence, police said.

The violence, in which authorities said 8 buses were set on fire by suspected traffickers and 6 police officers wounded, came only two weeks after the Brazilian city was awarded the 2016 Olympic Games despite worries over high levels of violence.

The helicopter carrying six crew came down after its pilot was hit in the leg by a bullet as it flew over the "Hill of Monkeys" slum in the city's north zone, where police were responding to a gun battle between rival gangs, Major Oderlei Santos of the military police told Reuters.

Makes me glad I'm going to visit the Alvears instead of doing the 3 free days in Rio!!!! The Alvears only have robbers every few months.

rio has a murder rate in excess of 4 times that of the whole usa, after certain times of night you are allowed to treat stop lights as stop signs. stop if u wish, to avoid holdups at intersections. one of our missionaries was robbed recently at the gate to his home. he is extremely paranoid/carefull taking different routes, watching behind him, sometimes he will just drive on by his home if he thinks someone is following him. this time he saw no one ,but they timed it perfectly, as soon as his gate swung open they came flying around the corner on motorbikes slammed a gun to his head and screamed i am going to kill you! fortuately they took just his wallet, the cash he just got from the bank his id and his cell phone.this is common.atms are hot spots to be robbed or have your card copied, rapes are rampant of tourists, san paulo is almost as bad its nasty.chicago has been known as the murder capital of the us in the past, in 08 they had 400 plus murders topping ny and la, they had 700 one year nasty by our standards ! we had something like 16000 plus murders in this country in 08.
