Question -- significance of Christ's foot-washing

I had someone tell me recently that the greatest significance of all when Christ washed the feet of the apostles after their last supper was that the high priest always washed the feet of the priests that served under him - 40 days before the Day of Atonement - to cleanse/purify them for their work.

While the implications of this would be profound, I can't seem to find the scriptures that address this. I haven't been able to talk to him again in awhile and wanted to study this out. Has anyone else ever heard this before? Is it sound doctrine or perversion?

It sounds like some thing you will not find in scripture but will actualy have to look for in history. I understand how you feel about something like this when I was younger it was told to our pastor by some one that in the bible days mens robes had a pleat like pants. There fore supporting the ides of women not wearing pants based on deut 22:5 later in life I found this to be untrue. I understand the significance of foot washing in light of the scripture we have and it is beautiful.
