Driving from Texas to Guatemala - need a ride?

My wife, daughter, and I are moving to Guatemala City in July. We've purchased a 1998 Toyota 4Runner in Texas that we're presently using, and I plan to drive it down to Guatemala, leaving about July 15. My wife and daughter already have their plane tickets purchased, so they will fly this time while I handle the paperwork to get the truck imported.

I'm looking for someone to travel with me that needs a ride to share fuel costs and for safety (mostly safety). I'd be staying in hotels with secure parking, along the lines of a Best Western or other secure hotel. I'll have a pretty full load, so just 2-3 suitcases, please. I would like someone who is at least functional in Spanish (negotiable).

I'll be leaving from Tyler, TX, but could pick someone up along major highways on the way down (Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, Corpus Christi, etc., basically anywhere along US-59, US-77, or I-35). I plan on crossing at Brownsville to Mexico and Tapachula to Guatemala.

I could meet someon at the above locations or somewhere generally along the northern coastal route (Matamoros, Tampico, etc).

You can email me at benjamin.barnett at gmail dot com

Serious inquiries only, please.

Yes, I have...still in contact with a couple of maybe's, but the middle of the summer is not the ideal time for them...they travel at beginning and end generally.

Hey Seg, My friends left here two years ago and started a church in Aguacatán, Guatemala. He came from there about fifteen years ago, had a dramatic conversion in our church and married a local girl. They came on the TV show with us one evening.

I understand they have a sizable congregation now.

Some great people - please visit if you ever get close to the area. I understand it is mountainous there.

Please be careful.

Blessings to you and your endeavors.

Thanks for the info. I don't know where that town is but will look it up and stop by if I'm in the area. Do you mind providing their name or personal info here (or by PM if you're more comfortable with that)?

I just looked up the town and I was about 20 miles from there 2 years ago! LOL I would like to go back up there sometime..it's several hours from where I'll be living, mostly due to road conditions, not distance. Thanks again for the info.
