The key is Man has never been an immortal being. Even Adam was not. Remember Elohim said he must keep Adam and Eve from the tree of life lest they eat of it and live forever.
22: And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat,
and live for ever:
Gen. 3:22
So man does not have immortality apart from it being given him through Christ.
6: Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
7: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour
and immortality, eternal life:
Romans 2:6-7
It is actually believers who will in the future resurrection be granted immortality not the sinners.
51: Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52: In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53: For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and
this mortal must put on immortality.
54: So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and
this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
55: O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
1 Cor. 15:51-55
The sinners because they are not immortal are subject to the second death. That is when they are judged and found unworthy of eternal life. They will then be cast into the lake of fire where they will
PERISH forever.
16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not
perish, but have
everlasting life. John 3:16
This most well known verse in scripture demonstrates for us the contrast in the reward of the Saints and the punishment of the wicked. Jesus came that the wicked might not
PERISH but rather have
ETERNAL LIFE.
Obviously eternal life is not something man already had apart from his faith in Jesus.
