Re: House Oks Hate Crimes Legislation.

I don't understand the whole "hate crime" premise.

Why is it worse to commit the same crime against an African American than it is to commit it against a Caucasian?

And why is it worse to commit the same crime against a GLBT than against a straight person?

Are African Americans better or of more value than Caucasians?

Are GLBT better or of more value than straight people?

Hate crime bill is not just for blacks or minorities. I heard of one case where it was used for a victom that was white.

Re: House Oks Hate Crimes Legislation.

Hate crime laws are stupid. Just enforce the laws already on the books to the fullest extent of the law.

I mean, if someone murders someone, regardless of it being a hate crime, you can only put them in prison for life once or give them one death sentence.

It's all part of this PC culture.

The purpose of hate crime laws are to mental in scope-- for would be perpetrators and those without restraint. It also gives a little more security to the American minority when they realize that the government realize that there are people out there who still have enough hate to do violence to others based off of their race or sexuality.

Also, hate crime status for a crime usually implies that there was some thought or planning involved-- taking away any chance of the crime being explained away as non-intentional.

Re: House Oks Hate Crimes Legislation.

its government taking legal action against a person's thoughts. and it makes no sense.

consider the fact that the guys who killed Robert Byrd in Jasper Texas. This was a horrible crime. It was done out of shear hate.

Texas has no hate crime statute, however, the punishment for the 3 men could not have been more harsh. 2 recieved the death penalty and the third life in prison.

Hate crime legislation would not have stopped the crime, nor would it have increased the punishment.

also consider, if you have 2 brothers beaten severly on the same day at the same time to the same extent, one beaten because of his race, the other because a druggie wanted the 5 bucks in his pocket, which one will the mom be more concerned about?

it makes no sense. What makes sense is to punish ALL violent crime in the harshest manner possible without regard to race.

Give every American equal protection (which is kind of constitutional).

Is the Hate Crime Law equally enforced regardless of race or sexuality?

yes. otherwise it would face problems with the supreme court.

I still believe hate crime legislation violates the equal protection clause.
