How Do You Define "the Anointing"?

I hear the term "so anointed" so often, such as "he's such an anointed preacher", "the anointing was so strong", "their singing is so anointed."

It seems to me that a lot of people use the term "anointed" when they enjoyed something, it made them feel good, or a preacher got all sweaty and ran out of breath while he was preaching.

How do you define the anointing?

For me I draw from Isaiah 10:27 and would say that when the anointing is actually present the result is people being freed. Example, an anointed singer will see people healed, saved, delivered during worship. An anointed preacher have the same affects. To me this is FAR different then getting goose bumps or experiencing a high level of excitement or enjoyment.

What say you?

Re: How Do You Define "the Anointing"?

I've always believed that people can be anointed for that moment (or hour). I have seen people who's lives were not 'anointed' by a long shot, rise to a specific situation that found themselves in and win the day.
It is easy to confuse modern day anointing with the type of anointing we associate with King Saul or King David....... (Where be get the "touch not mine anointed" stuff protect a certain class of people.)

I think a preacher is 'annointed' when his words are drawing me closer to God. When I can feel God's presence drawing near. The preacher doesn't have to be yelling, usually isn't.

Good answer!

I love the presence of God.

I always thought anointing was when you covered the mic w/your hand and put it halfway inside your mouth and preached a little louder and added a little growl for effect and ended each sentence w/ 'uh'. Can I get an amen-uh?!

The anointing comes from God. He chooses who he will anoint for his purpose.

Of course with the right moves, tone of voice, loosening of the tie, and shaking folks while you are praying for them, you too can be anointed!

Well, as one preacher said - 'If the Lord don't annoint me, I annoints myself!'

I might add that true anointing doesn't happen until you've busted at least one speaker!

While I know that many of the answers here are tongue-in-cheek, that in the Body as a whole there is a lack of knowledge concerning the anointing (even among those in ministry). Like one post said referring to a preacher who said if God doesn't anoint them they would anoint themself.

For me I don't want to be around someone who anoints themself because I have not yet found a "human" that has anything I want. I have found many who have figured out how to walk with God and are anointed of God and I do want that.

I think Tommy Tenney hit a lot of truths in his book "God Chasers" - those who really do chase after God find Him and when they do watch out world
