These lyrics were not original to the old full-of-pomp score: "Hail to the Chief."
I like them though. They fit a democracy where the power of choice is with the people.
The lyrics depict the citizenry paying tribute to one of their fellow citizens they selected to lead them ... Harry Truman personified this so well.
I believe Barack Obama does too.
The song does not suggest that we will not disagree with him and be vocal about it. That is our right. But through it all, we "pledge cooperation" with our fellow citizen elevated to such a responsibility.
"Hail to the Chief" ... not the king ... not the dictator ... but one of our fellow citizens we have "chosen for the nation."
Hail to the chief we have chosen for the nation,
Hail to the chief, we salute him one and all!
Hail to the chief as we pledge cooperation
In proud fulfillment of a great noble call!
Yours is the aim to make this grand country grander,
This you will do, that's our strong, firm belief.
Hail to the one we've selected as commander,
Hail to the President! Hail to the Chief!
