Just Got My Gas Bill!
I don't know if any of you know this but although Alberta, the Province to the East of us has a lot of Oil, B.C. has a ton of Natural Gas!
So much so that we use what we need & export as well.
They believe there is a huge pool of Oil just offshore but so far the environmentalist have fought drilling there.
That is another story.
I just got our Natural Gas bill since the weather turned cold & we used less then the same period last year & yet the cost is 30% higher!!!!!!
Don't these guys know that everything is crashing!!!!!!
I guess it is time to burn the furniture---sheesh!

Re: Just Got My Gas Bill!
Our gas and electric is handled by one company and we get one bill each month. One thing about living in the Cincinnati, OH area where we are is that the cost of living is fairly low. These are our bills for gas and electric for 2008. They are listed by the month we paid them, not the month of use.
January 286.05
February 333.66
March 316.44
April 339.51
May 281.77
June 180.77
July 207.43
August 263.15
September 300.29
October 261.50
November 162.47
due Dec 1 206.47
The low bill of $162.47 that we paid in November reflected 5 days in October when we were without electricity.

Re: Just Got My Gas Bill!
Hmmm. I am all electric and my bill averages $300 a month. Some months are over $400 while some are as low as $190.

Re: Just Got My Gas Bill!
We live in a very warm climate. There are about 3 months when we use the heat, which is gas. During those months our electricity is about $60 and our gas bill is about $70 (Total $130). Then there are 2-3 months that we very rarely use the heat or a/c. During those months we have a gas bill of $35 and an electric bill of $60 (Total $95). The remaining 6 months when we have to use the a/c our electric bill increases steadily and peaks at around $200 with a $35 gas bill (Total $235). So, we like every season but summer here...

Re: Just Got My Gas Bill!
We have propane and use very little for heating. We burn wood in the fireplace (Huge cast iron insert with big heavy doors and a blower to blow the heat out).
We have 2 propane heaters in the house that we use to supplement the fireplace on the bitter cold nights. We will generally not run them at night. Everybody has good blankets to keep them warm during the middle of the night. If it is going to get below freezing I will run a heater on low to keep a decent edge on the cold.
I will get up about 4am or so and turn heaters on to begin warming the house up for the kids to get dressed for school and once everybody is gone I will run one small electric heater right near our desk.
Our electricity runs around $65-$100 per month during the winter. It reaches a high of $250 in the hot summer months but we are running 3 window units. The one in the living room runs 24/7 for several months.

Solution: Install a high efficiency wood burning stove. It will pay for it's self in 3 to 5 years - depending on the venting system configuration and wood availability. Also, provides peace of mind in power outages and economic turmoil.
I am installing this one in my office in a few weeks.

Re: Just Got My Gas Bill!
We are all electric, with a wood burning stove and wood burning fireplace.

Can be.
Considerations:
Fuel availability - I have seen supplies run out more than once
Moving parts - most have three small motors and multiple safety switches
Back-up power - batteries/generator if desired for alternative heat source when grid goes down

Someday, I would like one of those that sit outside the house. With my son's allergies, there will be no more fires in the fireplace.
