Obama infomercial: Smart politics or risky overkil

Barack Obama will go on national television tonight and air a 30-minute infomercial about himself and his presidential campaign.

Several political image makers, both Republicans and Democrats, say it’s a smart move. But is there a risk of excess in it, as well?
While Obama hasn’t made many strategic mistakes in his campaign against Republican John McCain, he has, on occasion, shown a weakness for extravagance.

Only if people are smart enough to question what he said.

Obama's prime-time ad skips over budget realities

WASHINGTON – Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was less than upfront in his half-hour commercial Wednesday night about the costs of his programs and the crushing budget pressures he would face in office.

Obama's assertion that "I've offered spending cuts above and beyond" the expense of his promises is accepted only by his partisans. His vow to save money by "eliminating programs that don't work" masks his failure throughout the campaign to specify what those programs are — beyond the withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

A sampling of what voters heard in the ad, and what he didn't tell them:

Re: Obama infomercial: Smart politics or risky ove

In my book it was a huge waste of money. I am so tired of political commercials right now - and then for him to put something like that on for a whole half an hour! What an insult to my intelligence - as if I haven't already doen the research and found out what is true and what is not true that has been being said.

On our Dish Network, there has been a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week channel devoted entirely to Obama for over a month now. I wonder if anybody ever watches it? You have to believe he's paying BIG bucks for that!

And this man wants to be trusted with OUR finances? When he wastes this much on overkill just to get elected?

Scary, just scary!

I think it is overkill. Infomercials always bore me anyway. I think most people would flip to another channel.
