What would you do?
My cousin has alot of acreage near here. She has a big pond out back along with a par 3 golf hole. The other day she went out to go to the pond and discovered a redtail hawk sitting on the golf green. Usually they just fly away when you get near. But this one hopped away, dragging his wing behind him. She backed off and gave him his space.
Then she watched him for the next couple of days, but he never left. Never even tried to fly away. Same thing. Hopped away from her.
So she called Nature's Nursery, a wild animal rescue place near here. They told her that if she could capture it and get it to her, they would nurse it back to health. But that they don't have enough staff to come and get it. They said to put on big leather gloves and then put it in a box and bring it to them.
This is a full grown redtail hawk!
So what would you do? Any ideas?

that is absurd they tell her to capture it.
However maybe a very very large net like a fishing net.
Maybe call the police and they can send someone to assist

I think I would, if I were her, get an adult male friend or family member and ask them to get it for me.

Try to get the bird into the back of a delivery truck, drive it over to the specialists and let them handle it.
Call the local cowboy tack shop see if they have someone good enough to lassoo it.
chalk one up to the survival of the fittest and go get your shot gun.
Try and put a trashcan over it, then slide a garage sale sign under the trash can trapping it, flip the trash can over still covered and then take it to the specialists...
thats all I got...

Re: What would you do?
Use a blanket and keep it's head covered.
Big gloves will help, but they can still bite hard.

I like the blanket idea. When we caught a skunk in our livetrap a few years ago, that was the tactic we used. Skunks won't spray if they can't see you.

Can't. The laws say we can't do that. We can watch the poor thing die a slow death, but we can't put it out of its misery.

That's actually not a bad idea either.

Tried. Do you know that hawks have strong beaks? We know that now! LOL

hehhehe. She lives in the country. You can't even get the sheriff there for an emergency for a human being, let alone for a bird. Don't we wish!!
Thank for all the suggestions, folks. Some of these were really good!!

Re: What would you do?
Coop has the right idea Margie, you should be able to get good gloves where you get hunting supplies.
