Help! Puppies!!!!
Um. While we were gone to church this morning, a stray Mommy Dog had NINE puppies under our shed!!!!!! They are SO cute--we rescued them, brought them all into our utility room (with the mother of course), gave her fresh food and water, but...where do we go from here?
Is there anything I can or should do to make sure the puppies are healthy? The mother is very attentive, and has nursed them several times. She doesn't mind my daughter getting next to the pups, but will stand between anyone else and the puppies. (Good girl, I say!)
I have never had newborn puppies in the house before. Also, the Mother has a few ticks, and I'm wondering if I can put anything on her for that, or if that will hurt the puppies.
Anyone have any advice?
My Mother said she might keep the mommy dog, and we would like to keep one or two of the puppies and give the rest away when they're old enough. They look like a lab/hound mix. (4 blacks like the mother[lab-maybe a bit of something else], and 5 white with spots like a coon hound)
I'll post pictures later!

DO NOT TREAT THE TICKS WITH CHEMICALS! My wife says it could kill the puppies. Try picking the ticks off by hand. She knows this kind of stuff because she grew up living at a kennel and worked with dogs all of her life until we left California. Her mom was an expert groomer too.

Re: Help! Puppies!!!!
You can pretty much get anything you need from a vet or pet store and maybe even some free advice from a vet. If they have a humane society near you maybe you could contact them and they will be more than happy to help.

Okay, that's what I'll do. I only saw a few.

I am going to call our vet tomorrow. I'm just scared to death! It's like having 9 babies in the house. Well. I guess they are babies. LOL!

She says once the puppies are weaned you can go ahead and treat her with chemicals, if the ticks are still an issue. She also says if you don't feel comfortable with pulling the ticks off you can get an eyedropper full of Listerine (yes, the mouthwash) and put a few drops on each tick. Make sure the mama dog is separated from the puppies when you do this. It should take maybe 5-10 minutes for the ticks to start dying. Give her a bath afterwards so none of the Listerine gets on her teats. Hope this helps.

A problem I had when I was a sucker enough to rescue strays is that when the animals I had were old enough for homes, I found I was stuck with them. They were cats, though.
Rico's wife is right, though... You cannot put chemicals on a nursing mother because it will negatively affect the puppies. It is even best that the puppies be at least 12 weeks old before using many of the chemical treatments on them.

Re: Help! Puppies!!!!
Also, you can supplement the puppies' diet with liverworst. You basically have to open the puppies' mouths, and put small amounts of the liverworst in their mouth off the tip of your finger. Wait until their eyes are open before you do this.
Also, give the mamma dog plenty of food and water. You can supplement Mamma's diet with some cheese.
That'll be $89.95. When can we expect payment?

Re: Help! Puppies!!!!
Check her ears really good to MissBratt. Ticks suck the blood out bad and they can become anemic. If her gums are pale or not really pink she may need to see a vet.
