Delayed Praise Report

A couple of weeks ago my oldest son (23) drove "old faithful", our 1999 Ford Taurus that has been passed around among my kids, from Nashville to Austin, Texas.

It is about a 13 hour drive and he did it in one day. I spoke with him every few hours throughout the day and his trip was going fine.

Then that night when he was just a few hours from Austin he called me to tell me that the car was acting weird. He said that driving 80 mph on the freeway it appeared to be fine but that when he slowed down to pull into a gas station when he got below about 30 mph there was a thumping sound and feel from the front that was just like a flat tire.

I told him he needed to check his lug nuts and right there is where my 48 year old brain and his 23 year old one miscommiunicated.

He told me that he had "checked" the lug nuts and they were fine. He then got back on the highway and continued the last couple of hours on to Austin.

Here is the testimony part. His "checking" the lug nuts consisted of him looking at them in the dark and with his fingers.

When he got to Austin he looked again at the wheel that sounded funny and discovered that all but one or two of the lug bolts had sheared off and he had been driving on just one or two!

That noise and thumping noise apparently was a loose wheel wobbling. I am sure going 80 mph with that wobble one by one sheared those lug bolts off as he traveled.

If he had been going on to San Antonio or probably even San Marcos there is a good chance that the final bolt or two would have sheared off and he would have lost that wheel while going 80 mph.

I want to give thanks to the Lord for keeping that wheel on that car until my son was safely in Austin.

When he took it to a mechanic friend the next day the man could not believe what he saw.

Of course not! Speed limit is 70mph and traffic flows at about 77 mph. 80 mph is pushing it.

Re: Delayed Praise Report

I have had the back driver's side tire come off my car at 60 mph and pass me. It was my old '67 Cougar. Funny thing is right before that my speedometer started going crazy. Had all my kids with me as we were going to church that Sun. morning. Thankfully I was able to pull of the highway.
