How Does One Put Up A Website ?

Ok this might seem like a dumb question to some here.
But what exactly is involved in putting up a website?
I have thought about having a site before but I don't know anything about doing it ,and I can't really afford to sink alot of money into something either.
But maybe somebody could kindly explain to me how the whole process works ?

Depending on what you intend to do with the website, there are different ways to go about it.

You have to have somewhere to host (store until the other person views) the website. You can make a simple page in most new word processing software that will save as webpages. Or you can get a whopping book, learn HTML and write it all in Notepad.

Again, depends on what you want. If you are interested in telling the world All About Scott, go to www.blogger.com and get a free page, download picasa and you can upload photos to the blogger site.

Go to www.trexhost.com and purchase their S1 package. They will give you two name servers. Then go to www.dynadot.com and get a url of your own.

example: www.myurlformysite.com

Then log in to your account at dynadot.com, enter the two name server addresses, and presto you are on the web.

Log in to your site by typing in www.myurlformysite.com/cpanel and start adding features to your site. I'd recommend using fantastico in the cpanel to install the things you want on your site like wordpress for a blog, smf for a forum, etc...

visit my site at www.gustason.com to see what are some things that can be done.

I use:

Drupal for the main site (a content manager)
SMF (Simple Machines Forum) for the commentary and forum sites
Word Press for the Blog

All can be installed in cpanel via Fantastico De Lux

Hope this helps Scott.

BTW, costs are $5.99 / month for 5GB of space at www.trexhost.com and $8.99/ year to register the domain name at www.dynadot.com

Then get a freebie site from Yahoo. It has a site maker with templates that you fill in the blanks. Otherwise use a program like Dreamweaver and make it from scratch then upload it to some account somewhere via FTP

I would suggest staying away from free websites. Although they are a good place to start I would just stay away. You can out grow one very quick. I recommend registering your domain at NameCheap.com, Get hosting at Hostingpuppy.com, and using Wordpress blogging software or MyBB forum software. You can also find free website templetes anywhere on the internet.

"free templates" leave a lot to be desired and many of them , especially the premium ones demand you made significant changes.

For someone that is just wanting a simple website without a lot of pages a freebie is just fine, especially if you have power over what sort of ads get displayed and yahoo pages you can close the ads (or is that geocities? Are they still up?)

And when them you have a web editor for those people that don't know how to use one or HTML etc, it can really make it simple.

If you want to spend money, lunerpages is nice. That is what MOW uses. Buy Dreamweaver then get siteassist at www.webassist.com and use one of their template wizards.

For blogging you can get a ready made extension for dreamweaver or use WordPress. Many hosting sites include wordpress. I use Netfirms.com at the moment. They have free pages and premium pages. You can also use joomla, ruby on rails and other PHP apps. You can get free discussion board software on the net, but if you plan on heavy traffic like here you need a dedicated server.

Prax, methinks thou art mad.

But not as mad as me. I have spent over a thousand bucks over the last two years on web assist stuff and have yet to get any real use out of them.

Oh.BTW, tried Joomla, hate it. My food blog will use geeklog.

Is it because you just had no use for webassite stuff? Siteassist seems neat if you don't want to make a template from scratch each time. I don't see any need for the CSS wizard thing they have since DW already has good CSS support. Most hosts have e-commerce software installed so I never saw a need for that stuff either.

BTW what didn't you like about Joomla?

BTW when you have it done post the URL here
