love v. legalism today

interesting definition of legalism for your thoughts

if a married couple love each other, but then fall out of love each other and find others reasons to stay married, they only have a legal obligation, but no longer are "in love"

few problems with the above: it puts love as a touchy-feely abstract and not as willful commitment. the goal of this analogy is to say that people who question standards have fallen out of love with jesus, and to them it's all about legal obligations, therefore legalism. but for those who are in love, it doesn't matter.

he warns people not to follow others into "spiritual adultery" with a promiscuous and common world. those that have, have allowed a carnal spirit to come in to their mind. he makes an analogy of the helmet of salvation as something that prevents you from listening to criticism of the ministry and standards. "it's not because you are a coward, but that your mind is holy" and the same thing for "lurid novels and television."

obviously this notion that the only reason to question outward standards is because of a rift in love relationship between you and jesus is open to scrutiny and debate.

finally something interesting today

Re: WPF church back on the offensive?

Lesson#7
THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE HUMAN BODY (FLESH)

thess 5:23 Pray that God would sanctify you wholly (spirit, body, soul, that you might be blameless)

he then spends time answering his own question: what does it mean to be sanctified "wholly?"

context: thess 5:23 is a closing to the 1st letter to the thessalonians, where paul corrected irresponsible behavior. he tells the churches to be sanctified wholly or through and through. he indicates here that mind, soul and body are all important to god.

he then spends time talking about the shekinah and the temple

"God said don't paint the tabernacle" (??) "I want my glory glow to shine"

then he moves to 1 Cor 6 where paul tells corinth that their bodies are temples of God (both as a community and as individuals). but here paul is correcting what is a violation of the body - sexual immorality. this isn't make-up, jewelry or hair-dye. but i digress.

"we can't overemphasize importance of the fleshly body to being a manifestation of the invisible god."

1 tim 2:8 paul tells men to lift up holy hands without wrath or fear - their actions
1 tim 2:9 women are instructed about adornment, appearance - their appearance
"men's issue is their actions, women's is their outward appearance"

nevermind that 1 tim 2 is a letter of instruction for worship, likely correcting problems they were having. men were arguing instead of worshipping. women were flaunting their riches over their poorer sisters and making church a fashion show. he doesn't prohibit anything here, he stresses the woman's true beauty is in her good works not in her fashion - (what are you known for - fashion or good works?)

"both peter and paul spend considerable time on looks" (i didn't know that they did)

Re: WPF church back on the offensive?

I like how The Message sums up 1 Tim 2:8-9:

Since prayer is at the bottom of all this, what I want mostly is for men to pray—not shaking angry fists at enemies but raising holy hands to God. And I want women to get in there with the men in humility before God, not primping before a mirror or chasing the latest fashions but doing something beautiful for God and becoming beautiful doing it.

What is the 'considerable' time spent by the Apostles (or Jesus) on the outward appearance?

The OT analogy of the temple and saying we are to be like badger skins is as horrible an interpretation as it gets. Paul uses the analogy of the Temple, and some run with it, breaking it down to the letter. Your eyes represent the lamp, our hands are the table of shew bread, yada yada yada

Can we inject into this "God looks upon the heart, but man looks on the outward appearance?"

Re: WPF church back on the offensive?

I know Nate Wilson and he is smarter than all this. This is a bunch of non-sense and gobble DE gook to make him look smart in the eyes of stupid and unlearned people that don't give a flip! All they want to hear is One God, baptized in Jesus Name, Speaking in tongues since the Holy Ghost Came and "Holiness" Rules and regulations to keep the people enslaved to preachers with Massive Egos through legalism through fear!
God help these guys!

Smarter than all this? Are you implying he doesn't believe it? Seems he has taught this stuff his whole life and defined his ministry by it. His preaching, teaching, seminars, books, college, WPF... you name it.

"Gobble de Gook?" Sounds like my nephew at Thanksgiving Dinner slopping up Grandma's gravy.
