ILG, You can never go wrong living in the country. I would if I could. But honestly, you have never seen anything like this before? You lived thru the early 80's and the 1970's. You have seen worse.

in 1982 thru 84, (dont remember which year) unemployment reached 10% The Russians were still rumbling and the economy was in shambles. We were just coming off a period where intrest rates were as high at 21% and inflation had reached a feverd pitch. Over a thousand banks failed.

We HAVE seen things worse in OUR lifetimes. That doesnt mean things cannot get worse. Certainly they can. maybe they will. But the facts dont piont there YET.

And really every economic downturn in my lifetime has seen a group of people claiming that "this is the big one". Maybe one time they will be right. But not because they knew it. Only because the blind hog finally found an acorn.

I know people are always gleefully proclaiming a "big one". And, yes, I remember rough economic times. What I don't remember is the government stepping in this much and this much negative prognostication from so many sectors. I am concerned for the future.

Huge economic, political, and cultural chaos opens the door for a lot of these things. I have seen a lot of little things that seemed crazy when proposed over the last few years that might some day soon be accepted as ratoinal. Among them the idea of taxing those of us in "weatlhy developed nations" with a "world tax" of whch the proceeds would go to support third world nations. I would like to think that goofy idea would still be outright rejected by Americans no matter how far they are moving to the left but who knows.
If it's wrapped in a "for the children" theme, they could get lots done that wouldn't normally be accepted.

There are more people unemployed today than any other time in American history. The number is around 5,000,000.

This is the first time we have socialized (nationalized) banks and entire industries.

And Ferd, you are pretending that this is as bad as it is going to get.

It's not.

it may sound counter intuative, but the fact is, we have never spent out way out of an economic down turn. it cant be done. Every dollar the government "spends" it has to take more than a dollar out of the real economy.

STOP THE MADNESS!

As a percentage of the whole, we are no where near historic levels of unemployment. your comment above is a misdirection.

I expect the unemployment rate to get to somewhere between 8% and 9% and a slow recovery to start next year.

that aint pretend, but it is very much mesurable.

Re: Are You Prepared For a Rough Ride in 2009?

I just had to throw in this comment.... I got back from picking up prescriptions for my hubby at Walmart, and while waiting on them to be filled-- I found Kraft Mac & cheese for 50 cents a box. My 15 year old daughter wanted to just walk away from me when I put 20 boxes of it in my cart. She said, Mom, the cashier is gonna think that is all we can afford to buy to eat.

I said after the cost of those prescriptions, she might be right. (I was joking, but my daughter didn't appreciate the humor)
